Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad Historical Society
reported this on November 22, 2020 on FB

"The C&EI built five (22-26) of these modern bay window cabooses at their Danville Oaklawn Shops in 1957."

To me, they look like they were based on St Louis Car Comp. / NYC design

The Missouri Pacific Railroad began to quietly purchase C&EI stock in 1961. After approval was gained from the Interstate Commerce Commission, Mopac assumed control of the C&EI in May 1967. One of the stipulations of the merger required sale of part of the railroad to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.

That is probably how they became L&N 980-985?????

The Chicago Great Western Northeast (NE-5) cabooses were built by Pullman-
Standard in 1946.Tthey ordered 25 of the NE-5 style cabooses, which were numbered 600 to 624.

In 1955 the CGW ordered 10 bay window cabooses numbered 625 to 634 by the International Car Company.

In 1963 five more bay window cabooses were ordered from Thrall and numbered 635 to 639.

Two of the above ex Lehigh Valleys are at the End of the Line Vacation Station, *perhaps* 10801, 10804, or 10805

This hotel consisted of 43 remodeled cabooses and opened in December 1984.
They owners got the idea for the business after buying a caboose to be used as a guest house at their family farm in 1982.

In 1983, they purchased the cabooses from Chicago & Northwestern and Milwaukee Road rail yards and acquired a one mile stretch of abandoned railway near the Lake Geneva resort area.

They spent a year and a half remodeling the cabooses inside and out. Some of the cars were joined together to form suites.

In 2000, the couple was ready to retire and sold the cabooses individually to new owners. Many of the new owners use their
caboose as a personal summer home, and some offer their caboose for rent to tourists.
